China "Old Man" Dollar  C #25-3

    This piece, catalogued under "Formosa", is considered China's first silver dollar.

   This specimen was at times in each of the two most complete collections of  Chinese
coins: Irving Goodman and  Eduard Kann.


       Eduard Kann purchased every specimen of the "Old Man" dollar he could locate.
 His 25 specimens represent a significant fraction of all surviving pieces.  

     I acquired this piece from the June 3, 1991 Superior Galleries sale of  Goodman's
Chinese coins.
